In fact, I was putting it off as long as possible – even with all of the promises of money from the government. “The more that we have been using HealthFusion, the better things have been getting”
The more that we have been using HealthFusion, the better things have been getting for us. I was just looking at our dashboard (which is a wonderful tool) and saw that we are approaching $500,000 in claims submitted through the web portal — the fast, accurate and certain delivery of our claims to our insurers has been transformational to the way that we do business. When I say transformational, I mean just that — because of the speed and certainty of the delivery of claims to the payers, we have been able to change multiple other processes here. And, as a metrics-oriented guy, the proof has been in the pudding for us — in May, our accounts receivable was nearly $950,000. However, in the 3 months since we started sending 100% of our claims through HealthFusion, our accounts receivable has dropped to below $750,000. What used to be a 3-4 month turnaround for claims has dropped to 1-2 months. We anticipate that when we work all of our old claims through the HealthFusion process, we will have reduced our AR to around a constant $600,000 (about 40% lower than what it was at the start). And, I could go on about the other significant changes, but I would bore you… but, to me, this is a very real way to ‘see’ the healthcare reform that everybody is talking about…”

Just to give some perspective on my experience in billing prior to using HealthFusion…
My first claim submission experience was through outsourcing to an ‘expert’ who claimed to have a legit billing business. You are welcome to laugh only if this applied to your experience, and you have stopped the nonsense by starting a relationship with HealthFusion. I was basically faxing superbills to this incompetent and was held hostage by her inability to actually do work and my fear of switching horses in the middle of a race!
1) She told me that it would take up to two months to get me set up with insurers for online clearinghouses. HealthFusion accomplished this in days, not months.
2) The faxes soon turned into me completing a whole weekly billing spreadsheet that took about two to four hours every Sunday night (time away from my family) because her fax was always ‘down’. I would call to inquire about the fax, go straight to voicemail, and get a call back on average in four to seven days. You get right in to HealthFusion, and they treat you like they value your business… because they do.
3) I got no feedback about claim status and expected reimbursements. Planning the growth and expansion of my business was difficult without this regular financial insight. Again, my calls went unanswered for days and correspondence about account reconciliation was a jumbled partially faxed mess. I would pray daily to that the auditor would never come. HealthFusion makes tracking of claims easy and financial reporting less messy because it is all electronic.
4) I thought it would be a good idea to hire some in-house help to organize claims prior to sending them to my biller. Wrong, again. Are you beginning to see a theme here? Two big mistakes: One — Staff does [not] understand or care that their way is not the preferred way of doing things because they are only living until payday. Two — I was doing more work for a biller that I should have fired after week one. HealthFusion has allowed billing to be the responsibility of just one person in my office and has let me reallocate staff time to what they are there for in the first place — to help me create an exceptional experience for my clients and to assist me in marketing the practice.
There is a simpler way…
I started using HealthFusion just as a clearinghouse for claim files I created in my practice management system, a definite upgrade from the early days but still far from what I needed to commit to. I soon found that HealthFusion’s complete Practice Management platform was the way to go.
Here was the problem: I was still creating claims in another software system on a computer in which the data still needed backing up. The software had costly annual support and upgrade fees that when combined with the costs of data backup were no less than the full online software HealthFusion offered. Yes, it’s all online. They update it and back up the data. Yippee! I can leave the office and finish the last claims during Letterman. They even let me keep my old clearinghouse log-in for sentimental reasons (I am not kidding, and I still use it on occasion just to reinforce how good I have it now with the complete system).
The work in creating claims and processing payments from both the client and third party payer is cut to a fraction of the time. And it is all done online at the click of my mouse. Yippee times two! No headaches, no hassles, just freedom! I actually get to remember that I have a life outside of practice. And when in my practice adjusting, I am free in my head to connect with my clients’ real needs (something that all you chiros can understand).
So… stop trying to reinvent the wheel. There are no better ways because I have tried everything — it has already cost me the much bigger boat and jewelry for my wife (wait until you read Madaline’s testimonial)!
